he famous architectural complex of Haghpat is located in the region of Alaverdi, at a distance of 3 kms. from Sanahin. It was founded during the region of King Abbas of Bagratouni (928-951). The main cathedral of monastery, St. Nishan, was built in 967-991 by Queen Khosrovanoush and her sons Gourgen and Smbat. Beginning from the 11th century, the following buildings were added on the east, north and west sides of the cathedral. The churches of St. Gregory (1005) and Holy Virgin, the porch of St. Nishan (1201), the great cloister (1257) the arcades library (13th century) the campanile (1245) and the refectory (XIII th Century A.D.).
