THE OPERA HOUSE

The project of building the new Yerevan's Opera House began in 1930s, based on the master plan of the talented chief architect of the capital - Alexander T'amanian. He is considered "the father" of modern Yerevan -- designing the city's overall layout that was implemented under his direct supervision in the 1920's and 1930's. In 1937, the Opera House design received the first prize or the Grande Prix in an international architectural exhibition of Paris. T'amanian successfully solved the problem of blending traditional Armenian architecture with modern elements, including architectural advancements made in the twentieth century. The Opera House was perhaps, the master builders magnum opus [the Republic Square architectural ensemble is a close competitor]. Inside the Opera House is the Khachaturian Hall, named after the world famous composer, Aram Khachaturian. The Hall is home of the Armenian Philharmonic Orchestra.
